Jose Mourinho insists there is ‘no time limit’ on Chelsea’s pursuit of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney.

The Blues have made their admiration for the wantaway striker clear this summer, with the Premier League champions having already rejected two bids over the past month.

But despite the new campaign kicking off next weekend, Mourinho insists his side will not be rushed into a third offer for Rooney, although he hinted one could be in the pipeline.

‘There is no time limit,’ said the Blues boss.

‘We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would look to have with us.

‘We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the player, no contact, absolutely nothing.

‘We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day. And we will see how it comes.’

Rooney will join up with Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill on England duty next week, as Roy Hodgson’s side host Scotland at Wembley.

But the England boss has warned the Blues trio and Rooney to avoid discussing any matters which don’t involve Wednesday’s match.

‘Ashley Cole and Wayne are quite close friends. David Moyes must know that as well. If they weren’t speaking in a hotel, they would be speaking on the telephone,’ Hodgson said.

‘But I do accept a duty of care. I will try to make it clear to everybody, both the Chelsea players and the Manchester United players and anyone else for that matter – because United are associated with other players that we might have in our squad – that this is England.’
