Tottenham’s Andros Townsend must ‘kick diving out of his game’ after apologising for Chelsea tumble
Andros Townsend has held his hands up for diving in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea and admits he deserved to be shown a yellow card.
The England midfielder was booked for simulation just before half-time in Saturday’s derby at White Hart Lane, having tried to earn a free-kick from a Frank Lampard challenge.
And the 22-year-old admits his caution, shown by referee Mike Dean, was fully deserved.
‘It was definitely a yellow card. I said to the ref at half-time that as I have come inside the leg was there and he has pulled out at the last minute,’ said Townsend.
‘I still went over so it was a deserved yellow card. I apologised to the ref. I said to him at half-time that I thoroughly deserved it. Hopefully, I won’t do that again. Obviously, I have got to kick it out of my game.’

And Townsend, who spent part of last season on loan at QPR, admits Saturday’s tumble was an error on his part but says he is not a serial diver.
‘If the leg is there, you go over it. If there is contact, it’s not a dive. I can only speak for myself,’ he added.
‘It’s sort of instinct, things happen so fast, you make mistakes and that dive was a mistake.
‘The penalty I won against Swansea, people said that was a dive but if you are running that fast, with any little touch, you are going to go over.’
