Arsenal are plotting a £7million January bid for West Brom midfield enforcer Youssouf Mulumbu.

Arsene Wenger had the 26-year-old watched at Stoke a week ago and was given glowing reports on his performance.

Wenger, with cash to spend to follow up his record-breaking capture of Mesut Ozil in August, knows that he must strengthen the Gunners' squad to maintain a challenge at the top of the Premier League.

Mathieu Flamini’s impact, as a holding midfield man to let loose creative forces like Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey, has convinced Wenger he needs another player in the same mould.

Arsenal’s biggest problem will be persuading the Baggies to sell the Democratic Republic of Congo international, who signed a new contract in the summer.
